Christmas Crafts at the Library: Graham Cracker Gingerbread Houses

“I thought maybe we could make gingerbread houses, and eat cookie dough, and go ice skating, and maybe even hold hands.”

Will Ferrell as Buddy

(Updated 2021:  Be sure to check out more of our favorite books, sorted by category, over at our shop.)
Elf has been one of my favorite holiday movies since it was released in 2003, mostly because of how well Will Ferrell was able to capture and convey the spirit of a child through his character, Buddy the elf.  Last night, we went to the library to participate in the construction of holiday gingerbread houses and I was instantly reminded of some of my favorite quotes from the movie.  It’s a classic I look forward to watching with my children one day when they’re older.

While my daughter diligently worked alongside other children on her freeform gingerbread house, seeking occasional holding assistance from my husband, my 1-year-old son supervised and snacked on some graham crackers in the Tula so that he would not be tempted to barrel through anyone’s hard work.
The moments of intense concentration mixed with giddy clapping and laughter culminated in a pride and sense of accomplishment beaming from our daughter when she placed a final piece of candy on her house and decided it was complete.  This was a delightful holiday experience for our preschooler and our family.

We appreciate that the library organizes these kinds of activities and that they offered this one later in the evening so that my husband may attend as well.  While we enjoy these kinds of experiences at home, working alongside our neighbors and their families instills a sense of community in our children that we like to reinforce.  We hope you and your preschooler are enjoying the holiday season and all the unique opportunities that it brings to work through play.
