Ingredients

  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Whole Milk or Heavy Cream
  • 1 slice American Cheese
  • 1 tablespoon Ghee Butter
  • Salt as needed

Instructions

  • Wash hands with soap and water.
  • Put on your apron. Assist the child as needed with putting on their own appropriately-sized apron.
  • Bring the learning tower and ingredients to the workspace. The child can assist with gathering ingredients. This is a skill that will flourish with time spent in the kitchen.
  • Crack the eggs over the bowl one at a time and discard the shells. If your eggs are coming directly from your coop, you can model how to clean the eggs for your child first and invite them to participate. If you compost at home or your eggs are coming from your hens, kids can wash the eggshells in water and add to the compost or save them for feeding back to the hens. Wash hands with soap and water before returning to the recipe.
  • Use the measuring spoon to measure out the correct amount of milk and add it to the bowl. Demonstrate for the child or assist as needed.
  • Whisk the egg mixture, allowing the child several minutes to explore this exciting kitchen tool.
  • Turn the stove on medium heat. Wait a few minutes for the pan to heat up. Use the measuring spoon to add the correct amount of ghee to the pan. You may need the butter knife to help scrape it out. Again, model for the child how to use the measuring spoon or assist as needed.
  • The child can tear the American cheese into small pieces while the ghee melts into the pan.
  • Transfer the egg mixture to the pan.
  • Add the cheese and any additional salt to the pan.
  • Stir the eggs frequently while they cook. The more you stir, the creamier and more consistent they will turn out.
  • The eggs are cooked when they are formed and there is no liquid remaining in the pan. Remove them from heat and turn off the burner.
  • Transfer the eggs to a bowl and enjoy them while they are warm. For young children, depending on their level of experience, you may want to have the child hold their bowl while you transfer the eggs.

Notes

  • The same amount of heavy cream can be substituted for milk in this recipe.
