"Single-ingredient tostadas are a favorite snack in Central America. Refried beans, any kind of salsa, guacamole (or guacamole), ceviches, and escabeches can all be used to top them. Or you can build a salad on top of a tostada, sprinkle it with cheese, and call it a meal! Just keep in mind that the heavier the filling, the sturdier the tostada must be."

Tostadas are tortillas that have been fried, baked, or toasted and transformed into a harder, crispier version of themselves. You can top tostadas with your favorite toppings to create a delicious meal for the whole family.
Masienda's masa harina plus equal parts water makes for the perfect corn tortillas. Kids can experiment with the colors as they make their own unique tortillas.
If you're a real pro, you can tell the difference in the flavor of each tortilla based on the masa harina used. You can start with the tortilla starter kit or dive in with la familia.
A tostada is a toasted tortilla. Tostada translates to toast. If you were thinking you had to deep-fry your tortillas in oil to enjoy a tostada, think again. All you need is a comal or griddle.
Tostadas can be made from tortillas that are toasted, fried, or baked. We're going to show you how to toast them using a griddle or comal.

How to Make Tostadas
Ingredients
Equipment
- carbon steel griddle or comal
- plate or serving tray - we use a baking slab for family-style meals so the kids can help themselves and assemble their favorite tostada combos
1. Grab Your Corn Tortillas
Wash your hands with soap and water.
If you're starting with tortillas, you can turn the griddle on low.
If starting with masa harina - turn griddle on medium-low and check out how to make corn tortillas.
2. Place Tortillas on the Griddle
Place the tortillas on the griddle. Spread them out. If you're in the process of making tortillas on the griddle, you're in luck. Just leave them on the griddle and turn the heat to low to gradually remove the moisture from the tortillas.
In the picture above, the blue tortilla has just been placed on the griddle, while the multi-colored tortilla is almost a tostada.
3. Flip Them Over Occasionally
To gradually dry the tortillas and toast them, you'll want to flip them over occasionally. You can use your fingers or a spatula if needed.
4. Place Them on a Plate or Serving Tray for Assembly
After 15-20 minutes, your tortillas should be transformed into crispy tostadas with the feel of a cracker or chip. Transfer the tostadas to a plate or serving tray.
Repeat the process with all of the tortillas. Turn off the stove when finished.
From there, you can top them with your favorite tostada toppings.
